This work analyzes the reflection response of homogeneous samples with natural optical activity and compares it with inhomogenous systems made of a periodic helicoidal structure. Examples of these inhomogeneous systems are cholesteric liquid crystals or the cuticle of some beetles. In transmission both types of samples essentially provide the same optical response, but there are fundamental differences on how they reflect circularly polarized light. The Mueller matrix symmetries for the two types of media are theoretically deduced and experimentally verified with ellipsometry measurements.
